Over the river and thru the woods....

To Grandmothers House we go....
oh, wait a minute...that is not how it is for us. It is more like:

Through the everglades and then hellish Miami, to Grandmas house we go.....

Monday we loaded up and drove to cuba, I mean Miami, to have Christmas with my Grandma and Uncle.

My Grandma is 95 & 1/2.

When you are kid, you use 1/2 years, when you are over 90, you go back to using 1/2 years too.

We had a lovely visit. My Grandma is a HOOT. Not a coot, like the Grumpy Grandpa.

This is my Dad's Mom. She is never Grumpy.

We wanted to visit and take her out to her favorite restaurant "Dead Lobster". (red lobster)

But she would not hear of leaving the house. When I spoke to her on the phone she had went to WalMart a few days prior to shop for Christmas presents and could not think of leaving the house again until next year. Yes, that shopping trip wore her "slap" out.

So, being the wonderful Granddaughter that I am...we brought the Seafood to her.
We made her some mahi mahi, shrimp scampi, rice, and fresh asparagus.

She was in heaven.
I would not tell her what I was bringing to cook and this turned out to be a good idea. She said for days she kept asking my Uncle: "what do you think they are going to make?"
At her age, any surprise is a good surprise.

She always makes a big deal about Lindsay's birthday (it is the 27th) by getting her a birthday cake when we come for cream cake even!!

She is so funny.

We are singing happy birthday to Lindsay and just when we get done, Grandma screams out:

"dammit we forgot to put candles on the cake!"

This wonderful old woman has outlived 6 brothers, her husband, her son, & a grandson.

This past year, thanks to my cousin's son not knowing about birth control, Grandma became a Great-Great Grandma.

I heart her so much.......

  1. 95 and 1/2?
    no way.
    she's amazing.
and so are you. fancy doing all of that work just to make a little old lady happy.
    good for you!
I hope you have a truly wonderful Christmas.
But somehow, I am already sure you will.

  2. Oh she is beautiful and sounds wonderful!

Really, travelling's a bitch but isn't life about creating and living those moments, who turn into memories and pieces of us?

    Cake looks yummers. Reeeer!

  3. She ROCKS! What a wonderful person for your girls to get to know! I never knew my grandmothers... my mom's mom died when mom was a teenager, and my dad's mom died when I was a baby. So I'm ALWAYS "all about" the grandparents. That's one major reason we've always stayed SO CLOSE to all THREE sets of our kids grand-parents (yes, due to my parents divorce, my kids now have 3 sets - woo hoo!)

  4. PS - Your grandmother looks amazing for 95. Seriously. What is her secret? I wanna know! ("Enquiring minds need to know!")

  5. She's amazing! I love her spunk! I hope I look and act that great at 95.

  6. Wow. She sounds fantastic.

I loved the "through the Everglades then hellish Miami" phrase.

Is Miami really hellish? I've never been.

  7. What a wonderful story. Thanks for posting it, and the photos. I love it. You have such fun with your colorful family. You can bring that dinner to our house ANYtime. What a good granddaughter you are!

  8. P.S.: Grandma looks way better than a lot of people who are at least 10 years younger than she is. Way to go, Grandma!

  9. That is awesome! Great pictures and what a special time. She looks great for being 95 1/2! So you get your spunk from her?

  10. She looks incredible for sure--and Wal-Mart wears me out too.

  11. Wow, God bless her heart! One of my most cherished possessions is a photo from my son's baptism. It is a 5 generation picture, with me, my mom, my grandma, my great-grandma, and nestled in her arms is my 2 week old son. I am so blessed to have that picture! My great-grandma had 4 great-great-grandchildren when she passed away. Amazing!

  12. Well done you for coming up with such a lovely fishy surprise. I love the sound of your meal, and the cake looks great too.
Wish I was in Miami in the Bal Harbour Mal!

  13. What a beautiful grandma she is! Great idea with the meal. You are a good granddaughter. What great memories for your girls. Makes me want to get home to see my grandmas!

May you and your family have a very Merry Christmas!

  14. What a wonderful trip! Your grandma is adorable:)

Miami may be "hellish", but AT LEAST IT'S WARM!!!!

Feel free to drive up to VA with that very same menu in tow:) I'll even cook it once you arrive! Well, Cool Breeze will. Heehee!

  15. She doesn't look 95 and a 1/2. 95 maybe, but no way 95 and a 1/2 : ). She is adorable! I love grandparents. I think there is something magical and delightful about them! Even the mean ones.

    Merry Christmas Suz!

  16. Merry Christmas! Hope you had a great time with family!

  17. I know she is a great Grandma!

Make sure you bring some warm weather when you bring me my dinner some day. I love the Mahi.

  18. And I heart you, Suzanne.. You are such a wonderful example of a young adult raising a wonderful family. Your personality, your vitality, your wit-- all make for a wonderful life... I love your blogs--your crazy stories of life!!!!! Miami is Cuba now, isn't it???? And isn't Red Lobster "Dead" Lobster???? I thought it was!!!! ha ha

Grandma looks GREAT... George's Dad is 96 --and he's just as cute as she is!!!!

    Have a great Christmas...

  19. What a wonderful story! I'm glad you were able to take Grandma some seafood. The remark about the candles is something my father would say -- he's 96 1/2 and keep all of us on our toes.
    Merry Christmas!

  20. what a beautiful visit to such a beautiful lady! Your family Rocks!

    Merry Christmas

  21. Hey Suz! I want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and I hope 2009 will see all your dreams come true!

    I LOVE you blog!

    My best,

    Jerry in Tampa
