Watch out.....It's raining Iguanas!!!!

I won't complain about our winter temperatures.....that would be crazy of me. (It is 68 and clear/sunny as I type this) But for tropical life, it is cold.......could you imagine walking through your yard and an Iguana falls to the ground next to you?
It happens....

This was in our local news yesterday:

Temperatures fall, so do iguanas

The chilly weather in Southwest Florida this week was cold enough to force some iguanas to fall from trees.

Experts say the cold-blooded reptile's bodies basically shut off and go into a deep sleep when the temperature falls into the 40s they then lose their grip on the trees.

According to Collier County Domestic Animal Services control supervisor Dana Alger, iguana reports traditionally rise when temperatures drop, as the reptiles seek to warm themselves on asphalt surfaces such as sidewalks, roads and driveways.

Most of the iguanas were once pets that got released when they were too big.

A few years back, we found one in our yard. It was about 4 ft long. Not very nice either.
A few months ago, I had to slow down on a busy street to let one cross.

Where my Grandma lives in Miami, they are everywhere!!!!
All because people buy them, then when they are too big, they just release them and then they become a nuisance.
Any exotic animals running around where you reside?

Cute little boogers aren't they???

  1. i would scream if one fell right in front or near me, but they are cute. i'd rather it be raining iguanas than snakes, that would be too creepy and i wouldnt even dare go out. ya know, its good to have pets, but people can be so heartless.... when they have had enough of whatever pet they adopted, they just throw them away or abandon them on a country road. WTF is that about? i find it SO cruel. this time its iguanas but how many cats and dogs get disguarded like trash.... oooohhhhh that hurts me so much. it's right up there with missing children. no matter where we are, if we see a stray, diane will go fetch it, try to find its home by it's collar, and if there isnt one, we take them to the humane society in omaha. you wouldnt believe to what extreme she goes to rescue an animal. even rabbits and baby squirrels... theres nuttin i havent seen her try to save or return. our boxer bella was a stray we rescued from the humane society. she was originally found wandering on the interstate down by the iowa/missouri state line.
oops, i went off on a tangent. your blog was about iguanas and i have rambled on and on....
anyways, take a super duty umbrella so you are protected from those falling iguanas. bless their little scally bodies, poor lil dragon wannabees..... :(
    awwwww

  2. I don't think I'd want to be around when it was raining iguanas. I'm not aware of any exotic animals around here -- we have more than enough of the ordinary variety.

  4. Oh my! Oh my. OH MY! I had a friend in college who had one. He loved it. I don't think he would have ever gotten rid of it. But maybe! I am sad that people do that.

  5. People are really idiots sometimes.

We have peacocks in my neighborhood--not as great as it sounds--the sound that make is like a scream from a B movie.

We are surrounded by snakes, scorpions, coyotes and bobcats where I am. Not any better, I realize!!

  9. Gee ... it only rains caribou where I live. Then again, we've have about 2 feet of snow in the last day and I doubt any lizard would survive. Although, if they can shovel, I'll gladly take them in!

  13. They sure are more handsome than snakes or spiders! LOL

Ugly creatures where we live? Er, yes sure. They're called homeless junkies and they litter our parks and street corners... :-(

  14. I would FREAK if an iguana fell out of a tree and landed in my yard. I am NOT a reptile fan. At all. (Sorry.)

btw - did you know there are wild turkeys living in the Emory area? No joke. We were driving through not long ago on our way to some in-town restaurant and had to stop for some wild turkeys in the road. Seriously. Who knew? But I'd take THAT over iguanas any DAY. LOL. :-)

  15. I live in Huntington Beach, California. I was driving down Pacific Coast Highway, (the road that runs parallel with the ocean) and I turned right on to my street and I had to slam on the breaks because a racoon was crossing the street. A racoon at the beach? I would have been less surprised to see a seal!
