My house just got a bit greener...

I have finally switched from paper napkins to cloth.
I am sure you are all clapping for me! Right?
Oh, yeah, I hear you now. Thanks guys.

I figured if She can do it...then I can also.

I don't know what took me so long....really, it was a simple switch and it does not make my laundry pile any bigger. (just a tad, but not enough for another load)

Speaking of Grandma J.......

She made the funniest comment when I mentioned that I also compost. Her response:
Compost? What's that? Do you make your own potting soil? Your are so green, flowers are gonna start sprouting from your ears.

BTW, Composting is really simple also...anyone with a small yard can do it.

REALLY.

I would not consider myself a tree hugger....but I am trying to make friends with the earth....

She also wrote a really cute post about how she and I are not like twins.

If you did not read it yet,...it is right
HERE.

I got such a chuckle out it....It really tickled me green Pink.

I had Lindsay read it and she laughed too.

I told Linds: "If we ever get back to Texas, we will have to go visit Grandma J in person"

Being the skeptic...she said: "you know, Grandma J could really be a MAN!!"

This proves that my warnings about the Internet are being heard!!

So, I encourage ya'll to go read Grandma J...get in on the fun.....She lives on a compound in TX and I swear it does not look like a prison at all....She is just as nice as can be.....

And I am pretty sure she is NOT a man.

  2. Cloth Napkins??? I am just not sure about using the extra water due to the fact that our water cost are outrageous! I suppose I could try to do a better job at cutting down on my other laundry but I already have everyon using there towel more than once (except me don't tell, hey I do the laundry..right)I also make the husbster wear his dress shirts twice ....the one who makes the most laudry is my 20 year old....I could kick him out or make him go to the laundry mat....right?
Oh I read gradma J post about you two being almost twins......I love the pics of the dogs....!
I no longer have my own back yard so that being said I cannot have compost. The hubster and I sold the big house for a townhouse so now I have to have everything in pots on my deck. You see 3 out of the 4 kids moved out so we figured we would buy smaller so there is no room for them to ever return. My only son we threw him up in the loft and I honestly don't think he will ever leave because I do his Laundry!!!!
    Love your blog.

  4. I love cloth napkins. There's something that feels so..... "civilized" when you're dining with cloth napkins. You know?

I will check out Grandma J's blog. It's been awhile since I've popped over there!

  5. Aren't you thrilled that your daughter "heard" you about the dangers of the Internet? That's very encouraging. She's right, ya never know. I'll check out Grandma J's blog.

I'm one for always having a glass of ice water in hand and I used to use those big red or blue plastic party cups. I stopped using them and decided to use a washable cup to try to do something to save the environment. It's a small step but at least I made it.

    Have a great day!

    Much love from NJ,
    Sue

  6. I remember going to Grandma J's blog some time ago and was planning on going back there but forgot. I read her comments on various blogs and have had intentions of checking out her place and now I have finally went over to her place and see what a great blog she has. Thank you for pushing me her way!

I too have told my kids that I hope to meet many of my blogging friends some day. To which my youngest son replied in a simular way as your daughter did. And went on to say, "Mom your the one that always taught us to never trust anyone on the internet and you shouldn't believe everything they say!" To which I replied, "So you were listening to me?" He went on to say, "So now we have to start worrying about you meeting up with some crazy people you have met on the computor Mom?" LOL!

  7. I feel better now that you are using cloth napkins. Thanks for doing more than your share of being 'green' - it makes up for my lack thereof. I try but living on the road doesn't make it easy. I recycle as much as I can but that pretty much is the extent. So thanks for picking up my slack!

  8. ....isn't a paper towel cloth?
Here in Greenville we can recycle papertowel in our compost! ....so that's my excuse!

  9. I can vouch for Grandma J. She is real and she is a SHE. And if you ever do get to Texas, you have to let me know as well.

  10. I use cloth napkins for company - I'm not sure if I deem the hubby & stepson worthy of them yet - ha,ha!! Went over to Grandma J's and love her - anyone with sarcasm ranks high in my book.
P.S. I'm a tree hugger -nothing wrong with it...don't be afraid of the dark side....whoops I mean the green side.... :-)

  11. I love Grandma J! Cloth napkins and composting are pretty impressive. Sometimes I think about how much trash my family has buried in some landfill. It's a yucky thought.

  12. I missed that post of hers--too funny.
    Are you scared? Ha!

  13. Oh my goodness! I had to run the girls over to the HS for track practice early this morning, so I'm just not checking on my "favorite" bloggers.

I love the cloth napkins, and it doesn't make much more laundry at all. I use 3-4 a day, mostly because I'm always chomping on something. You can pretty much just throw them in with any load of laundry...unless you buy fancy prints that might run like madras or something.

I have to laugh at Lindsay! It's good that she is skeptical though. Tell her that the compound is just another word for a compost.

Breathe easy, Lindsay, Grandma J is a girl person. The Running Girl has met me here in Texas and in San Diego CA...and I was the same person both times...except everything is bigger in TX, including Grandma J.

Now for a shameless plug for The Running Girl. She really runs...and cycles and swims! She will be doing a Century ride, which is 100 miles around Lake Tahoe in June. She's doing it to raise money for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. This will be her second Lake Tahoe Century! She also does several marathons throughout the year..this girl doesn't stop, so go read about her. AMEN!

  14. every little bit makes a difference. It makes me nuts when I see people litter. NUTS! It's amazing how many people are all about themselves and could give a damn about our planet b/c in their minds, who cares, they'll be dead before it gets really bad.

  15. I'm GREEN with envy. My household is no where near ready for cloth anything.

  16. We just wipe our hands on our pants.

    KIDDING!

I love that you're so green and lovely about it. What better way to encourage people to try it out too? :-D

  17. I can personally vouch that Grandma J is NOT a man. Unless she's had a sex change operation. Which I highly doubt.

I read her blog every day! You're right--she's sweet, witty, and funny. And she reminds me that my MIL isn't as bad as I make it seem.

You, Suz, are going to be so proud of me. I am preparing a post about my amazing swith from water bottles to the Brita, all thanks to you.

  18. Cloth napkins and compost! I'm really impressed. We have a compost pile but only do cloth napkins with company we want to impress. I followed the link in your post -- I really didn't think there could be anyone else like you, but now I'm not so sure.

  19. Congrats, Suz---for turning GREEN. It goes with your blonde hair really well... I'm half green ---so what color is that????? YALLER?????

We do compost ---but don't live on a compound!!!! ha... George's roses love our compost dirt...

I also don't use my dryer much--nor do we use our AC much in summer. Luckily, we're in an area that never gets too hot or humid...

We don't use paper napkins either--and haven't for a long time. I still use paper towels though and still use those plastic bags from the grocery store. SO--I'm a work in progress.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  20. Are you ALLOWED to have cloth napkins if it isn't a holiday? Humf, I did not know that.
    Are you the pretty twin?

  21. If Grandma J is a man I would be Very, VERY sad : ). She is a delight. I love her more than almost any other blogger. I don't remember how I met her, but I am SO glad I did. I do remember when I met you Suz. You are a fabulous green hero.
