This is an old magazine my Mom gave me a few years ago. I keep it in a drawer with some family pictures...I pull it out and read a few pages on occasion for a giggle.I will share some of it with you....cause you know you love to giggle too.
The cost of the magazine.... just 55 cents.
My how times have changed...and this is all the proof we need!
Cigarette advertising!!! Do we remember this stuff? I remember some in magazines and on tv in the 70's and 80's. I don't think they advertise anymore....do they?
The gentle touch? I am thinking, "hey buddy, get that nasty smellin' cigarette away from my hair and dress!!!"
(I hope you can enlarge the pictures to read the fine print...how come sometimes I can get them to enlarge with a click and sometimes I can't?? any blogger experts reading this?)
Anyone care to join their husband on a business trip to Europe? Goodness knows, a woman would not travel there without her husband...why ever would she???
And now, lets start deciding our children's careers..shall we? We know that my children very well may be convicted felons ...... How about yours?
Is Tommy/Tammy going to be a Pharmacist? This one is for Jenn. The good news? Right out of school you can earn $125 a week!!!! How great is that considering that the cost of pharmacy education is between $100-$500 dollars a YEAR!!!!
ALL of this makes me appreciate all the bra burning that was done before ME!!!
Besides, back then bras were much cheaper...I'm not burning ANYTHING!!!
I love looking back at stuff in the 50's.... even watching old episodes of "Leave it to Beaver". It was definitely a different time, wasn't it?

ReplyDelete$500 a year to be a pharmacist! Oh yes, that is DEFINITELY the field to go into : ). I haven't seen Cigarette ads in a long time. The ones I remember had a man in a cowboy hat.
ReplyDeleteIt is so funny to see how much life has changed...for the better. My mom used to have a copy of a Modern Pricilla Magazine from the early 1900s it advised you to brush your hair 100 strokes a night AND keep it scrupulously clean by washing it EVERY SIX WEEKS! What?

None of my kids chose convicted felon as their professions but there's still the grandkids. I see indecent exposure potential in the very youngest one!
ReplyDeleteha ha! Love it. I love when COSMO puts old quotes in their magazine, from cosmos past. Last month they had a quote from the 50's that read "Dont eat the entire day before a date. If you must, eat raw haburger meat for energy. You'll feel thin, and beautiful." WHAT ADVICE!!!
ReplyDeleteOh the good ole' days. I was watching TV the other night and ran across the show Newhart. I loved that show and to watch it now, well, it's different that's for sure, clean and pure. Good TV.

ReplyDeleteMy parents built their house 42 years ago for $13,000. Their mortgage was $75 a month and they didn't know how on earth they were going to afford it. My taxes re $10,000+ at the moment. It really sickens me to think about it but the times they are a changing. Can't dwell on something that I can't change.
ReplyDeleteCan you imagine going to school to be a pharmacist for $100-500 a year? That's crazy cheap but I'm sure back then it was considered expensive. I'm afraid to think what the future holds.

Even more so when you have to get the Super-Duper "cages" that don't look like straitjackets to strap the twins into, otherwise you're stuck with the stock brands that have FIVE hooks. Jeezaloo!!! I have a friend with normal sized boobies who is thrilled when she sees the bras on sale at Old Navy and get like 10 of them for $100. I hate her.

ReplyDeleteFrom the Photo Expert (ha ha ha): If you load a picture which is say 800 pixels ---you can enlarge the picture by clicking on it. Smaller pictures (like 500 or so pixels) --like the ones you email, can't be enlarged... It's all about the pixels (image/size)... Got it now??????? Ain't I smart????? Tee Hee....
ReplyDeleteLove the old stories in magazines. My Daddy smoked for 50 yrs. (like most everyone else back then).. I remember hiding his cigarettes when I was in high school. I was very OPPOSED to smoking even as a teen. AND--since Daddy died of emphasema (due to the smoking), I am still VERY opposed to smoking. I obviously have never smoked. My drug of choice is FOOD... Gads!!!

OMG suz, that's the year i was born! yep, 1955. i was a newborn when that magazine came out. wow. yes, back in the day, smoking was prestigous, classy, and fashionable. everyone around me smoked. and i always hated it. hopefully i wont get sick from the second hand smoke. shoot, i remember my dad and uncles didnt even use filters on thier smokes... then they made camels, again with no filter. man, they were sucking in the good stuff then, werent they?
ReplyDeletebut for fashion, it was so glamorous. todays designers use stuff from back then to make their dresses today. i wonder if the coullotte will ever come back. i had some and i remember they were a pain when you needed to use the restroom but fun, too so girls could hang upside down on the monkey bars! i also remember laying in the front seat in cars (no seatbelts) and it seemed like there werent as many crashes back then. bread was 5 cents a loaf. i saw gas @ 16 cents a gallon. THERE WAS PENNY CANDY! and you could get 2-3 pieces for a penny. wow. thanks for the walk down memory lane. remember the way a brand new pair of patten leathers sounded like in the spring once it warmed up, and there was sand on the sidewalks. it would crunch. i LOVED that sound. and the way my grape popcycle looked irridescent in the sunlight...

ReplyDeleteHere's how I fixed the enlarging thing. In Blogger, when you are doing a new post at the top right of the box, you will see 2 tabs - Edit HTML and Compose.
If you are writing under the 'compose' tab and try to grab and move a photo to another spot in the text, sometimes (but not every time) the line of code for the pic gets pulled apart. The whole code is there - it's just not all in one spot and therefore the pic can't enlarge.
To stop that, when you add a picture, go to the edit html tab. The entire piece of code for the picture will be right at the top of the page.
The comment won't let me put a sample code in this box. But it will start with a less than sign followed by an a. There will be a bunch of garbage. And it will end with an a followed by a greater than sign.
All you have to do is highlight the entire piece of code and drag it to where you want it in the blog post. And now it will enlarge.
Oh the good ole days. Your post brings back lots of memeories of how things were and how things are now. In some ways we have come so far but in others not so much. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

ReplyDeleteAnd the mag? I have to say, sometimes I wish I had been born "back then." Some things are definitely for the better. But some things? I wish were just simpler....but then I would probably still be stuck married to the Ex b/c that's what people did (including his parents) so all's well that ends well. Sigh. I'm such a waffler here...
