It's all about the moolah.

I drove past the dollar store the other day and saw a sign in the window that caught my eye. It said:

No $100 bills accepted.

Of course, this made me wonder: “what if I went in there and bought 100 items, would they NOT accept my 100 dollar bill?”

I was tempted to go get a 100 dollar bill and try this out, but really, I am not much of a fan of the dollar store.

Sure, I have shopped there before. My kids love it. My Mom and Aunt love it, but it leaves me always thinking the same thing when I am in there: “I bet I could purchase some of this stuff elsewhere for 99 cents, maybe even 98 cents….”

I loathe getting ripped off, don't you?

  1. Yes! I totally hate getting ripped off too. I hear what you're saying about it being cheaper somewhere else...like the small gift bags...they're 79 cents at Walmart! :-)

But, don't let it stress you out tooooo much.

  2. I agree, some of their $1 items are a rip-off but it is easy to get in and out of there if you're in a hurry. I did have one cashier get irritated with me for buying one item and the smallest thing I had was a $10!!!!

  3. I don't have a 99 cent store here, but I do go to Dollar Tree every couple of months. You have to know the value of what you are buying. I buy some of PJB's clothes there, like his board shorts!

The gift bags at Dollar Tree are 2/$1. I like the greeting cards and packs of 8 note and thank you cards.

Suz I think they might take your $100 bill because you are so nice and sweet..but one of the reasons retailers don't want $100 bills is because of the counterfeit bills out there.

Did you know they have the energy efficient light bulbs (the curly looking ones) in packs of two?

  4. I think I would have trouble spending $100 in a dollar store. And you can never get anything for a dollar anyway -- the tax always pushes the price over a dollar.

  5. But goodness, can you imagine how much stuff $100 would buy? Wow!

  8. The only time it's fun to shop the Dollar Store is when you have a young grandchild visiting you. Give him/her a five dollar bill--and let them buy FIVE things. It's hours of entertainment for them ---and easy for me!!!! ha

    Have a great weekend.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  9. OK, Suz, you may not find this hard to believe, but I have spent OVER $100 more times than I can remember at Dollar Tree!! I really love my dollar store. Admitedly, those times almost always involved purchases for school, but still I've done it! (for example - I found really cute individual chalkboards one time, so naturally I had to get 30 of them for my class! We use them almost daily, and YOU have to love how much paper we're saving!)

  10. What I love about dollar stores is that you can buy a bunch of stuff, take it to the flea market and sell it for $2-3 and people totally pay that price thinking they are getting a great deal.

All I can say is...there's a sucker born every...well, based on the crowds I see at the market...few seconds.

  12. I once watched my sister spend close to a $100 dollars in a dollar store and by my estimation the crap wasn't even worth $25. Not so much a fan myself. Jeez. I didn't know I felt so strongly about this!

  13. Some dollar stores can be pretty good but others are mainly cheap crap. I do think you have to watch the prices because you can get some of the stuff cheaper some place else. I have gotten some good deals though and sometimes it's just fun to look at what their trying to sell!

  14. I hate when I go into a dollar store and NOT everything is a dollar. One guy had some items marked for $2.50. Then in my opinion - you can't call yourself the dollar store!

  15. you have to really know what is a good deal and what is a rip off.

  16. I always describe China to my friends and family back home as one giant dollar store. It's hard to find presents to bring back that are cheaply made and kinda crappy. It makes sense I guess, everything in that store is made here!

I am just like you, I'd want to do the $100/100 things thing too.

  19. Last week, I watched a guy getting arrested for shoplifting outside The Dollar Tree. I'm thinking that if I am going to get arrested for shoplifting something, it's not going to be from Dollar Tree!!

  23. You are so funny : ). I love dollar stores. Usually. I love finding things that are worth $2 or $3 for $1. That just delights me to no end. Then I bring my treasures home and they break immediately. Then I cry!
