As a kid, Christmas was the ultimate day for me. The entire Christmas season was what I lived for.
I wanted Christmas to start much earlier than it did. (the opposite of me today)
One year, when I was about 9, I decided it was time to put up the Christmas tree. Mom was at work. I pulled the tree box out of the storage in the back of the house and drug it to the living room where I proceeded to put the entire tree up.
I was standing on a tall stool and untangling lights, and this is where my fun ended. No, I did not fall. But my brother finally had enough of this. He called MOM. I know, the ultimate betrayal.
He ruined the Christmas surprise for Mom. I still recall seeing him on the phone in the kitchen, and saying: Mom, Suzanne is putting up the Christmas tree!!!
What the heck is his problem I wondered?
I don’t know what was said by her, but I can only imagine there was much sighing and a few frustrated words.
You see, it was not even Halloween yet. Yes, I was ready though.
Who says a calendar should dictate my holidays? Me and baby Cindy. I still have her today. Mark and his pogo stick, that was the ultimate arm breaker toy of the 70’s.
I love that story. Siblings can be such pests, though. If my kids surprised me with a pre-Halloween tree, I would be delighted -- I think.
ReplyDeleteYour childhood photos are adorable! Yes, I can visualize the betrayal and the vintage phone your brother used! I love that you still have your baby plus all the wonderful memories that go with her! Priceless!
ReplyDeleteWow, before Halloween?? You were an excited little girl! Such cute pictures, I can't believe you still have your doll...I still have my first doll too :)
ReplyDeleteCute post, Suz---even if you did put your tree up before Halloween... How cute is that!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the pictures. I have similar ones in the '70's of my sons..
Do you remember putting all of those icicles on the tree????? GADS---we'd put them on --one by one. AND---when Christmas was over, we'd take them down and carefully save them for the next year... See??? I was a 'recycler' even back then!!!! ha ha (Not that we couldn't afford a new 10 cents box of icicles.. ha ha )
Hugs,
Betsy
I have absolutely no trouble at all believing that you tried to put up the Christmas tree before Halloween. You were obviously ahead of your time -- now almost all of our stores do that! But I loved the story and the pictures.
ReplyDeleteToo funny! I remember we were always the very last ppl to set up our tree. When I was little, I never understood why... now I realize it was b/c our house was TINY and my parents were just tired by the end of the day. So now we always set up the day after Thanksgiving. : )
